ALRIGHT SO STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS WAS GOOD M’KAY?

Spoilers for the movie under the cut

Lets just start with the things I wasn’t keen on and just get that out the way

Having Kirk demoted

I thought it was pointless to demote Kirk when we all know he’s just going to become captain again. Yea it brought Pike back and gave Kirk a personal reason to go after “Harrison” but this could have been done in a way that Kirk retained his captaincy. Have Pike still be at the meeting and get killed because HELLO he is an admiral.

I understand the decision from the angle that it showed there are consequences for Kirk’s actions but this barely played into the movie at all. He had a moment when he told Spock he had to follow orders and NOT send an away team to Kronos (gonna go with the movies spelling here) only to take that back like five minutes later.

I guess you could say he learned humility in that he was very concerned about his crew in this movie but I believe Kirk has always been that way. He saved Spock because he cared.

Carol Marcus

Completely useless. They could have had Chekov go down to the planet with Scotty and defuse the warhead. I mean all she did was yank the whole thing out. After that she did NOTHING. The fact that she was the Admiral’s daughter did not play into it because he simply beamed her off the ship. My brother suggested at one point that maybe she was pregnant with Kirk’s kid and he simply forgot about sleeping with her but nope (not that I would have liked that but i’m just saying).

Spock and Uhura

Could have done without their little melodrama.

That’s it for the stuff that bugged me.

On the whole loved the VFX (except I kinda liked how warp looked in the first one better), Acting was amazing, dialogue was snappy and I laughed a lot, pace was good, more space in this one which is nice, lots of good throwbacks to TOS (THE TRIBBLE EEE), Spock Prime was sick (i’ll go into a little bit more detail on this below), Birds of Prey looked awesome as did the Klingons.

When Kirk said put on a red shirt to Chekov everyone in my theater started to freak out a bit.

Pike’s death was sad as hell and when Spock mind melded and Kirk cried I teared up a bit.

Scotty and his whimsical self was amazing in this one.

JOHN HARRISON/KHAN

So Abrams and crewed lied, Benedict is Khan. I actually believed the lie for a bit. Soon as I saw those people in cryostasis though I knew. I get why they lied as many people would be reluctant to see Khan again when he was played so well by Ricardo Montalban in Wrath of Khan.

I loved Montalban’s portrayal but I loved Benedict’s as well. But let it be known that they are VASTLY different. While the essence of the character remains the same, Benedict made the smart decision not to copy Montalban’s style. Khan in Wrath of Khan was over the top in that way Star Trek gets. Benedict playing him like that was would have been terrible. That is not the kind of actor Benedict is. His calm yet menacing performance was spot on and when he needed to be emotive he did it without being ridiculous. On a purely fangirl level how delicious did Benedict look in this film? Oh my god when they were on Kronos and his hair was kinda wet and *GEORGE TAKAI VOICE* oh my.

The scene on the bridge of the Dreadnaught when Khan is “negotiating” with Spock is definitely one of the best scenes in the movie. Seeing my number 1 and 2 actors in such a great scene was like nirvana.

Benedict succeeded in being genuinely frightening, something I wasn’t sure he could pull off. I am quite happy with his portrayal of Khan.

KIRK’S “DEATH”

OH NO. When Spock Prime showed up and Spock mentioned Khan (Spock Prime’s reaction to the name was PRICELESS btw) and Prime told Spock presumably how he sacrificed himself for the crew I was sure i’d have to watch Spock die…. AGAIN. But ooohh no J.J. had something else in mind. As soon as Kirk and Scotty got to the engine room my brother turned to me and whispered “It’s Kirk’s turn.” I swear I wanted to jump up and be like SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING THIS IS NOT HAPPENING. An lo it did happen and it was heartbreaking. If someone says this was not more sad than Wrath of Khan they are LYING. This was 10x worse. SPOCK AND KIRK BOTH CRIED. KIRK TOLD SPOCK HE WAS SCARED. DON’T LOOK AT ME.

On a serious note the scene was EXTREMELYEXTREMELY well acted and Spock’s KHHHHANNNNNNN was epic.

So I REALLY liked this movie and I will be seeing it again. Definitely recommended not only to trekkies but fans of good filmmaking. 9.5/10
