  14. Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada

This actually exists. In 2014. I have a Canadian partner, I am mid transition…I knew I had to be careful but holy shit. This actually terrifies me. How does this make any sense? Why do gender markers even exist on photo ID’s?

I’m sorry but this makes COMPLETE sense. Border agents stop ANYONE who does not match the photo or description listed on their passports for a good reason: YOU COULD NOT BE WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE. That is dangerous to all others on the plane. This regulation should remain in place. The means of changing your gender should be amended. Showing a second piece of I.D should be acceptable.

No, this regulation should not remain in place the way it is now, because it SPECIFICALLY singles out transgender people by requiring sometimes expensive surgery that Canadian healthcare doesn’t always fully or even partially fund in some provinces, surgery that might not be desired by the person in question. As stated in the article, non-operative transgender persons, genderqueer and gender-binary nonconforming persons, and pre-operative transgender persons are effectively barred from flying. It is discriminatory. It is an affront to Canadian values, and as a queer Canadian I am disgusted that my own country, which prides itself on diversity and acceptance, allows this rule to still exist.

NO it  doesn’t holy crap. If you look at the actual regulation with all the subsections it basically says who you are has to match your passport including your face shape, birth date etc. Nowhere does it say transgender people must have a certificate, the regulation for CHANGING YOUR SEX ON YOUR PASSPORT DOES. That’s why I said THAT should be changed. Your sex should always match your passport transgender or not.

Why in the world would a border agent let someone on a plane when they do not look like their passport or their info does not match? Do you know how much it looks like you’ve stolen the passport and are illegally boarding the plane? It’s a SECURITY ISSUE. I myself as a non transgender person have been held up at the gate because I didn’t look like my picture that had been taken 5 years earlier. It’s not fucking specific to transgender people (hence the other subsections). I’m not saying this has happened but theoretically a woman could steal a mans passport (or vice versa) and illegally board a plane by saying that she’s transgender and that’s why the sex is different. That’s a disgusting thing to do but there are disgusting people in this world. So I’m sorry but it’s a security measure that’s in place for a reason.
